Reflections on love
It's February, which unfortunately means we're being inundated with Valentine's Day marketing. The beginning of each year really does manage to take a toll on our confidence: January says we have to be better than we were last year, and most of all better than everyone else, and then February comes along and reminds us that no matter what we did in January, it isn't good enough if you don't have a romantic partner to share it with.
We personally think that's fake, and in 2021 we're refusing to allow that type of messaging to make an impact in how we see ourselves. For February this year we wanted to focus on self love, and we couldn't think of a better way to do that than to reflect on what is arguably bell hooks's most famous book: All About Love: New Visions.
If you haven't read it, first of all we highly recommend it, but this interview does a very good job of covering the most important ideas. Namely, that romantic love isn't actually the be all end all. The idea that romantic love is the most important thing that can happen to a person is a myth. And we agree. We think that the most important relationship you can have it the one with yourself, so this month we challenge you to make space for self love and platonic love.
I hope you're able to take some time for yourself. The world is heavy and we need each other.
Love you all.
